This comes up a lot. Basically, Timken is the parent company. 'Timken brands' usually refers to their portfolio companies like Timken (bearings, engineered steel), Fafnir, and Torrington. For automotive aftermarket, you'll often see bearings sold under the Timken name that were originally Torrington or Fafnir designs. The quality spec is still Timken's, but the branding can be confusing.

2. Is a Timken wheel bearing worth the premium?

Honestly, it depends on your situation. For high-load applications like heavy trucks or performance vehicles, yes—the metallurgy and heat treatment are usually superior. For a standard commuter car? The difference is marginal. A cheaper bearing might fail at 120,000 km. A Timken might go 150,000. That extra 30,000 km isn't worth the premium for everyone.

3. Miata timing belt: OEM vs. aftermarket? Any difference?

No. Period. The numbers say 'aftermarket is 30% cheaper.' My gut says 'OEM can save you headaches.' I went with my gut on a batch of wheel bearings for a fleet vehicle contract.
